  • Assessment of three articles/web pages
  • Postcard to an adult with explanation to teacher

Introduction

Talking with your parents (and vice-versa) about sex is easy to say and harder to do. This WebQuest will help you and your parents (or another trusted adult) find good websites about the important topic of parent-child communication.

Task

In this WebQuest you will use the “postcard” feature of a credible website to prepare a brief, key message to your parent or other trusted adult recommending three websites or pages about parent-teen communications.

Process and Steps

Don't forget to take notes on your activities in this WebQuest. Use Section 3.1 of your Personal Health Journal.

  • First, go to the website of the Canadian Health Network and read their advice on finding trustworthy health information on the web. These are general criteria that should be used whenever you seek health information on the Internet.
  • Next, review the evaluation criteria for writing papers to persuade people. Many of those criteria will be useful for you in rating the articles that you will read as part of this WebQuest.
  • Next, you will visit at least three websites (or lengthy web pages) from the list below that advise parents on how to talk with their children and sexual health. You are to address these basic issues in that group report:
    • What is the advice being given to parents (summarize in point form wherever possible)
    • In your opinion, is this good advice? Why? Or Why not?
    • What other advice should be given to parents? Are all of the topics covered? What other sexual health topics should be discussed?
  • The list of websites and/or lengthy web pages is as follows. Select three that you want to examine:
    • The Parents Section of www.sexualityandu.ca
    • Documents and resources found by doing a keyword search of the Sexual Health Section of the Canadian Health Network (Use search words "parents and teens and sex")
    • The lengthy web page on Raising Sexually Healthy Children from the Peel Public Health Unit in Ontario.
    • The Parents Section of the Planned Parenthood Federation of Canada website.
    • Several PDF documents on parent-child communications found on the website of the Sexuality Education Resource Centre in Manitoba
  • Prepare and submit individual reports on each of those three readings/web pages and submit them to your teacher.
  • Go to the "postcard" page of the http://www.sexualityandu.ca/ website. Select a trusted adult (it can be a parent, relative, coach, teacher or other person) and send them a postcard listing the three web pages or online articles that you feel are really effective (or ineffective) in providing advice to parents. Include the URL as a link and provide a short phrase explaining why you think they should visit that page and read that material.
  • Send a copy of this email to your teacher and add an explanation (about a paragraph for each of your three choices) on why you selected those three pages.

How Your Work will be Evaluated

Your report on the first assigned readings should follow the format of Section 3.1 of your Personal Health Journal.

Your recommendations about the three selected articles/web pages will be assessed on how well you have used the evaluation criteria for persuasive writing.

Your “postcard” to a parent, trusted adult or other person will be assessed on how well you have identified the best part of the article or web page and how well you have explained that choice in your report to the teacher about the postcard.

Conclusions and Extensions

As an extension to this WebQuest, students could ask their parents to search several websites and recommend three pages about sexual health for their teens to read. Or, they could ask their parents to visit the quizzes on websites for parents listed in this WebQuest.
